. >>> breaking news, house republicans have just wrapped up a meeting to discuss the fiscal cliff deal worked out by vice president joe biden and senate m minority leader mitch mcconnell. the deal which passed overnight will see income taxes rise on individuals making over $450,000 a year, and families making over $550,000 a year. let's listen in now as house democrats speak. >> caucus meeting which -- in which the vice president not only roused the entire membership, but also gave us a very thoughtful and detailed explanation of what's gone on, and how it was that he and the president working with the democratic and republican leaders in both houses were able to come together on this compromise. we first want to say thank you to the vice president for being so gracious. quite honestly, so frank in his conversation with us in explaining as much as he could about what's transpired over the last several weeks. we now are waiting to hear from our republican colleagues, whether or not they want to do what the senate did in a very bipartisan fashion and give the men people an opportunity to

. >> a special because we are talking about the fiscal cliff, an especially bad year for republicans, not only losing the presidency by four points and lost winnable senate seats. they got slaughtered with latinos, problems with young people, women. the democrats, they obviously did not win back the house. the senate looks like will be tough in 2014. looking at the fiscal cliff on the democrat side, it is very important that the president convince people that he's serious about the deficit in 2013 and for republicans one of my resolutions is that they try to not be the party of the rich any longer. both party haves a perception problem. the exit polls bared that out. the election bared that out and passing the fiscal cliff and looks like we will have kind of another temporary crisis in the next month or three months, they again have to fight the stereotypes and label that is built up. >> one of those jumped out at me. maybe run it by you. for the democrats, the argument of don't offend gun owners and manners, you don't want to offend anybody needlessly, a voter or group. i get that. y

and i think that certainly we are here on new year's eve, and we are upon the fiscal cliff. what we do need to focus on is how do we find that common ground? because what we do know is that i believe the republicans and democrats alike want to put our country on a course of fiscal discipline, we hope. . mr. speaker, i'm a small business owner. i employ 100 people. for me hts 100 families. i need a budget and a payroll, and what they're looking for when i talk to people back home, they're looking for some stability. they're looking for certainty. and what we're doing here is not providing any of those things. and yet i do believe that there is a spirit of comity that we want to find that common ground and move forward. i'm sorry that we're here on new year's eve and we haven't solved this problem long ago. i will say, mr. speaker, that the house did send over a bill in august over to the united states senate. going back to my time as a small business owner, i can just tell you if i had given something to one of the people i work with, marked it urgent and put it on their desk

cliff together? let's bring in our washington correspondent for more on this. what can you tell us about the meeting coming up in less than an hour? what will the president talking about with the republican leadership? >> there are only six people who really know what is going on, and what will really happen at the white house, and they will not talk, but i expect them to talk about higher taxes for the wealthy. are the republicans willing to accept that? they will also talk about entitlement spending cuts. are the democrats willing to accept that the government will spend less money? if this is the case, then they might find common ground. one important issue, of course, is going to be the members of the tea party. they are saying compromise is a bad word. of course, it will be difficult for them to find a compromise, to bring them into the boat. >> we had the meeting today. we have the special session on sunday. do you expect a compromise, or are we going over the cliff? >> this is really difficult
